Speed Limit Brake FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Bontrager Speed Limit road brakes

Q: Why do the arms look wider than other brakes?
A: During the design process we focused on maximizing performance and minimizing the weight. The large cross-sections of the arms allow the brake to maintain its top performance and provide a stiff, responsive feel at a minimal weight.

Q: Why did Bontrager use bushings instead of bearings?
A: We chose to use a special engineering-grade bushing because it has many advantages. First, the bushings handle contaminants and weigh less than a standard bearing. Additionally, the bushings are self-lubricating and are extremely robust with high abrasion resistance under extreme loads. We have tested them thoroughly and they have also proven themselves in other products in extreme situations including underwater and outdoor equipment as well as many automotive applications.

Q: Does this model have a quick release feature to allow for extra clearance when removing a wheel?
A: Yes. There is a quick release lever that is located on the top side of the forged arm. To release, simply raise the lever. Note: the quick release lever is meant to be used in the open or closed position only.

Q: How do you balance the spring to center the brake?
A: To center the brake, place a 6mm hex wrench in the main pivot and turn slightly until the brake is centered.

Q: What type of brake pads are used?
A: Brake pads are a very important component of the brake's performance. We have included a special Bontrager brake pad compound that exceeds other pads on the market. This compound has also repeatedly shown to perform three times better than the competition in wet conditions.

Q: Can you use carbon rims with this brake?
A: Yes. But it is very important to use a carbon specific pad when using a wheel with a carbon rim. We recommend the Bontrager Carbon Stop pads for use with Bontrager carbon wheels.

Q: Are Bontrager road brakes compatible with levers on the market?
A: Yes, Bontrager Speed Limit road brakes are designed to work with road levers from the major manufacturers.

Q: Are there any special installation considerations?
A: No. The Speed Limit brakes should be installed like a standard road brake.

Q: What is the warranty on the Speed Limit brakes?
A: The Speed limit brakes features Bontrager's 5 year unlimited warranty.
